The Volcanic Byway; July 2017

After spending most of July in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains we took highway 395 north following a series of small highways and back roads that penetrate the volcanic lands of northern California. This is a land of high, juniper-covered, arid sage lands punctuated by massive ancient lava flows, mineral hot springs, and glacier-covered volcanoes rising above it all. This is the Volcanic Byway. The High Sierra; July 2017

We spent May drifting down the Oregon coast, June in the redwood forests of California, the 4th of July on a mountaintop in Sonoma County’s wine county, and sweltered in gold rush country in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Now it’s mid-July and time for the High Sierra; the wilderness and small towns along legendary highway 395 on the eastern edge of the magnificent Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Continue reading
