Monthly Newsletter; May 2017:

IMAGINING:

Although we avoid having a strict itinerary, we’re finding that the easiest way to travel is to plan-out our destinations in two-week segments. We already got stuck in one place we didn’t want to be due to lack of planning.  So, we’ve developed an overall plan for the summer, but we’ll plan it out in more detail in two-week segments.  Continue reading

April 2017; Monthly Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter; April 2017

IMAGINING:

Last year we traveled through South America and Mexico with carry on size backpacks; staying in airb&b apartments and small hotels. You can read about those adventures in our Trip Reports section. But, our plan was to re-group when we returned from South America to decide what to do next. If we liked traveling in our backpacks we’d continue, probably to Turkey, Greece and the Balkans. If we were tired of backpacking we could buy a recreational vehicle (RV) and tour through North America (Canada, U.S. & Mexico). If we were tired of traveling altogether we could settle back down again, either in the Seattle area or in the American Southwest or in Mexico. Continue reading

Monthly Newsletter; March 2017

IMAGINING:

Last year we traveled through South America and Mexico with carry on size backpacks and staying in airb&b apartments. This year we’ve traded the backpacks in for a pickup truck and a fifth wheel trailer. A BIG pickup truck and a twenty-seven foot fifth wheel trailer; luxurious after coming out of our small packs. December 2016; Monthly Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter; December 2016:

IMAGINING:

As 2016 comes to a close we are thinking about 2017. We learned a lot last year; lessons we’ll carry with us into the new year. But now we’re planning; should we settle back down, build a home and relax? Or should we hit the road again, explore parts unknown, and learn some more? Continue reading

November 2016; Monthly Report

Monthly Report; November 2016:

IMAGINING:

As 2016 comes to a close we are thinking about 2017. We’ve pretty much decided to focus on North America next year. Alaska to Baja, or something like that. So, after spending Christmas in Chihuahua Mexico we’ll be heading back to Seattle to gear up for 2017 most likely buying a pickup truck and travel trailer to “camp” our way from north to south until – well, until we get tired of doing that. Continue reading

October 2016; Monthly Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter; October 2016:

IMAGINING:

Our South American journeys have ended, a little earlier than planned, and now we’re in Mexico City (just in time for the Dias de los Muertos celebration).   We’re resting up and re-supplying in Mexico City (replace some worn-out clothes and our cameras that finally died after their soaking in Hurricane Matthew in Colombia). After a few days in Mexico City we’ll continue on through southern Mexico and Guatemala. Continue reading

August 2016; Monthly Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter; August 2016:

IMAGINING:

August was a busy month full of experiences, but as we move along we’ve kept our eye on the future; imagining ourselves climbing through the Andes and sweltering in the Amazon of South America. But traveling through central Mexico was enough to stir anyone’s imagination and we keep discovering new things; about ourselves and the world as we experience more people, places and things. Continue reading

July 2016; Monthly Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter; July 2016

IMAGINING:

We’re late posting our July monthly report.  Between traveling, intermittent WiFi, access and computer problems we’re just getting back online.  And as for imagining, well; we’re planning our travels to South America and wondering what that will be like.  We’ve discovered Airbnb, a world-wide network of people renting apartments and houses, and our first Airbnb stay, a small house in Ajijic Mexico on the shore of Lake Chapala high in the Sierra del Tigre mountains.  Our first airbnb has been so good that we extended our stay for a week.  We’ll report on all of this soon in our Trip Reports. BY THE NUMBERS; Preparing for Long Term Travel

BY THE NUMBERS; Preparing for Long-Term Travel:

There’s a lot of things you never thought about when planning to travel indefinitely and without a home base instead of going on a three-week vacation.  This post is about how we prepared for long term travel.  Other travelers might take different things or go to different places and the “blogroll” in the sidebar of our home page has links to some excellent travel blogs that describe how they prepared.  But for us, the first step for planning long term travel was making an honest assessment of our travel style and resources.
